The other alternative is to give them 1 food/turn. If you go near any of them (or Badong) you will see their land/armies, then get diplomatic relations with them, and then the wars start. But easy to manage: they can't declare war on you unless they have seen you (giving them diplomatic relations with you) so in general, when I play as Sun Jian now, I'm just careful to not take over the Changsa armory or the city right below it, or the Cangwu.I want to say farm, but if you look on the map you can see I'm basically setting up a buffer of land between Han and Nanman factions.
